WHAT TO EXPECT:

Heroes Diving for the Sea (HDS) is dedicated to giving Veterans and First Responders the chance to reconnect with the activities they love — no matter their physical or mental abilities. Through adaptive outdoor recreation events, we create opportunities for Heroes to enjoy meaningful time in the great outdoors — either on their own or with friends and family.

How to Participate

  1. Watch for Clues

    • Clues are posted on the HDS Foundation website and the PTSD Heroes YouTube Channel.

    • New clues appear at least monthly, with extra weekly or daily clues sometimes posted.

    • Bonus clues are available monthly at our gold & silver donation sites.

  2. Hunt for Markers

    • Markers are hidden across the United States.

    • Locations are always publicly accessible — no property damage or special permissions required.

    • One marker will be underwater at a recreational scuba site. The rest are on land and can be found without special equipment.

  3. Redeem Your Marker

    • Contact HDS using the info on the marker.

    • Redeem it to receive your gold or silver scuba weight.

    • If multiple people find a marker at the same time, they’ll share the prize. Any disputes are resolved by the HDS Board of Trustees.

Gold & Silver Donations

How the Weights Are Made

The gold and silver used to create the scuba weights come from donations collected at participating sites.

What’s Accepted:

  • Solid gold and silver (no plated materials)

  • Items with gemstones attached are allowed

  • Any carat of yellow or white gold

  • Yellow gold is melted together to form the gold scuba weights

  • White gold is liquidated and donated as cash

Collection site partners may also accept trade-ins or purchases and provide equivalent gold or silver value to HDS. Once enough material is collected to create all four weights, any surplus is liquidated and accepted as a cash donation.

Important Notes:

  • HDS and partners do not guarantee the purity or exact weight of the scuba weights.

  • Each weight is hand-poured, and the final amount depends on the collected materials.

  • This is a community adventure, not a guarantee of precious metal value.

Key Guidelines & Timeline

  • Clues are only released after the first gold or silver weight is completed.

  • The scavenger hunt officially begins when the first weight is poured.

  • Participation is voluntary and open to everyone.

Why It Matters

Many Veterans and First Responders have lost the ability to enjoy certain activities they once loved. This scavenger hunt gives them — and their families — a way to explore, reconnect, and have fun together. It’s also a way for the entire community to get involved in supporting Heroes through adventure and discovery.
